Galway City Museum launches educational school project, Galway in Objects

Galway in Objects / Iarsmaí na Gaillimhe
Galway in Objects is a project for schools that explores museum objects and their stories and encourages learning through creativity.
Galway City Museum is excited to announce the launch of its new educational initiative, Galway in Objects, designed to engage local schoolchildren with the rich history and culture of Galway through interactive learning experiences.
Galway in Objects aims to foster a deeper understanding of the city’s heritage by encouraging students to observe, question, and respond to historical objects, including the statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire, Claddagh Ring, Galway Shawl and Penfold Postbox.
The project provides teachers with bespoke resources, including lesson plans and activity guides, to support classroom learning. These materials are designed to promote critical thinking and creativity, aligning with the primary school curriculum in history, English, Gaeilge, and the Visual Arts. A dedicated microsite within GalwayCityMuseum.ie has been developed to host these resources, including short films featuring experts and photographs that can be used to support the learning process. The materials can be used independently or, ideally, in conjunction with a visit to Galway City Museum.

The Galway in Objects project has been funded by Creative Ireland through Galway City Council.
The project is now available to all schools for the foreseeable future. School groups wishing to engage with the project can email Museum@GalwayCity.ie.
CPD Summer Course for Teachers on Objects and Creativity
From July 1 to 5, Galway City Museum is also hosting a teacher’s CDP course, in conjunction with the Galway Education Centre, based on the project. The course promotes using objects for teaching and incorporating creative activities, art, drama and storytelling around objects, while making teachers aware of the Museum as an educational resource. Full details can be found on the Galway Education Centre website
