At present, LMETB has responsibility for 16 post primary schools, 2 community national schools, a Centre for European Schooling and two dedicated PLC colleges. At primary and post primary levels there is much evidence of arts in action on a daily basis. Such activities also promote and foster engagement with parents/guardians and the wider communities in which our schools/colleges operate.

Our mission statement in LMETB is excellence and innovation in education and LMETB is committed to working in partnership with statutory, community and voluntary organisations in promoting the arts in education.

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board established one of three, national Local Creative Youth Partnerships (LCYPs) in 2019, under the auspices of Creative Ireland’s Creative Youth initiative. Guided by the voice of the child and young person, the LCYP works in partnership with state and voluntary agencies to deliver creative programmes for young people, in communities across Limerick and Clare, over the life of the Creative Ireland plan up to 2022. Limerick and Clare LCYP identifies ‘the meeting point between formal and informal education’ as the site for nurturing its work and in this context works mainly in youth and community settings.

The partnership includes representatives from local authorities, youth work, early years, arts and education as well as from several areas within Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. Key partners include Limerick Youth Service, Clare Youth Service and Foróige; with whom the LCYP has already delivered creative programmes in dance, photography, drama, craft, makeup, film and in a range of visual art genres. The choice of activity is based on data collected through consultation with over 300 young people across 26 youth work settings in both counties.

Future Film Makers, a training programme run in collaboration with the commercial film sector in Limerick, provides opportunities for young people, aged between 18 and 25, seeking to get a foothold at entry level in the film industry and was launched in October 2019.

In tandem with its focus on the youth sector, the LCYP is developing creative programmes for Early Learning and Care (ELC) settings and works closely with Clare and Limerick County Childcare Committees in this regard. Dance and movement for babies and toddlers and oral storytelling for young children have been explored through two conferences for ELC practitioners in 2019. These areas of interest are central to the LCYP programme going forward.

Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership (Kerry LCYP) whose lead partner is Kerry ETB, is building a network in Kerry of collaborators, organisations and creatives who engage with young people creatively through programmes, events and activities that are guided by young people and which link formal education and out of school settings.

Kerry LCYP is part of Creative Youth, an initiative of the all-of-government Creative Ireland programme to enable the creative potential of every child and young person. A key principal of Kerry LCYP is collaboration that enables young people to be heard. At its core, it is a partnership network which enables information sharing and collaboration between local creative youth service providers to bring about a better use of existing resources and initiatives in Kerry.

Kerry LCYP forges new partnerships with local creatives, which complement the work of the formal school settings. The aspiration is that it will act as a change agent within local communities, unlocking new ways of working and supporting the creative and cultural education of thousands of children and young people. Importantly, the remit of the partnerships goes beyond that of the “arts” and includes cultural industry and creative arts activity across many disciplines (including areas such as heritage, STEM, entrepreneurship).

The range of creative activities is limitless – everything from traditional and visual arts to coding and tech; music and opera to circus arts, comedy, street arts & spectacle; creativity in business, architecture & design to heritage; film, drama, theatre or dance to literature and creative writing. Youth consultation informs the work of the partnership so that the annual work plan is well placed in a community setting.

Galway and Roscommon ETB is the second largest ETB in the country and includes three islands. Our region is renowned as a place where arts and culture are celebrated. Galway has been designated as the European Capital of Culture 2020, and GRETB, under Music Generation Galway is leading a new and exciting orchestral project for young people called “Symphonic Waves”, which was conceived under the Galway 2020 bid. County Galway has the single largest and most populous Gaeltacht area in the country. Promoting Gaeilge is an essential element of GRETB’s core service. We have eight Coláistί LánGhaeilge and a number of our Further Education and Training centres in Connemara, operate through Irish.

Galway and Roscommon ETB’s Strategy Statement 2017-2021 Empowering People for Life was published in early 2017.  GRETB’s mission is: To support individuals through learning, to achieve their full potential and contribute to social, cultural and economic development and its five core values are: Leadership, inclusivity, collaboration, innovation and inclusivity and accountability.

GRETB runs twenty second level colleges, an extensive adult education service and a range of post-leaving certificate courses. It is involved in many partnership activities at local level and provides a range of educational supports to enhance the quality of its education programmes. Galway and Roscommon ETB supports young people and adult learners through its schools, youth services and 40 further education and training centres.

GRETB is committed to promoting and supporting creative and cultural opportunities through arts in education programmes in second level colleges and in the school of music located in GTi in Galway city. The Further Education and Training Department in GRETB fully supports the creative arts and the potential the creative arts offer to engage learners, to assist them in their learning and also the potential of learners to produce creative arts of a very high standard and quality. GRETB supports a significant level of creative and cultural programmes for young people. PLC programmes offer opportunities for learners at QQI Level 5 and 6 in a range of programmes including, art portfolio preparation for people wishing to study art at a higher level, animation, a growth area in the Irish creative arts arena and drawing and visual inquiry. Programmes in fashion design, millinery and fashion retail and visual merchandising are also offered. The design and production of furniture is available at this level and the furniture produced is exhibited annually. There are a large range of media programmes available including film and documentary, music performance, studio and live sound production. GRETB is currently developing a Media based traineeship in partnership with Screen Training Ireland. This Media Production Assistant traineeship will offer an opportunity to learners to learn the skills of a production assistant while also completing an extensive on the job training experience.

GRETB is the lead partner in 3 neighbouring Music Education Partnership areas: Galway city, Galway County and Roscommon. In September 2017, GRETB was successful in its applications to Phase 2 of Music Generation and is now commencing the roll out of Music Generation vocal and instrumental tuition programmes with children and young people from January 2019.
