The Everyman – The Beating Heart of Theatre in Cork

We deliver an ambitious annual programme of work in a beautiful venue that serves the audience of today and builds the audience of the future. The Everyman is a centre of excellence for theatre that engages with and reflects the artistic and civic life of Cork and beyond.

Currently our marketing manager is a Creative Associate as part of the Arts Council’s Creative Schools Programme. Arts in Education is something we believe in and this is reflected in our activities at The Everyman.

In 2019, 10,000 students from schools and colleges attended a show at The Everyman.

There were 22 Post-Show Talks and 35 Behind the Scenes Tours.

Education at The Hunt Museum means using the collection, expertise and enthusiasm of the museum and its partners to provide learning opportunities for the widest possible range of audiences and at all educational levels. We offer a variety of fun and educational tours, workshops and integrated learning sessions for primary school pupils. We believe that museums are a very special place for learning and engagement. Activities in the museum can complement the curriculum, inspire your class and increase their understanding of the past while providing a fun day of learning outside of the classroom.

Alongside our Museum programming we offer a range of different loan boxes and outreach programmes. Our Loan Boxes contain an array of handling material, activity resources, and Teacher Packets which can be used in the classroom to bring the past to life.  These are suitable for use in both Primary (4th, 5th and 6th) and Post-primary settings.

Roscommon Arts Centre believes arts programming for children and young audiences are an integral part of our organisation. 20 productions aimed at school audiences will take place in 2018. The Bookworms Festival which is organised between the arts centre and the arts office sees a number of shows and workshops for children, including off-site visits to rural schools where artists work with children on projects and events. In response to the Arts Council’s assessment of the festival last year, the 2018 programme included readings by author Siobhan Parkinson Lollipops Festival.

Our Lollipops festival runs throughout the month of October with a number of school shows planned. We rolled out our ‘Wheels on the Bus’ initiative in 2017 which will continue in 2018. This initiative, funded by Creative Ireland, allows us to offer reduced ticket prices to rural schools who need to hire transport to attend arts centre events, making our programme more accessible.

We work closely with children’s practitioners and theatre makers, offering space to research and develop work for our young audieces. To date we have worked with Branar Theatre Company, Monkeyshine Theatre Company, Anna Newell, Andy Manly, Thomas Johnston, Paul Curley and Julie Sharkey who are all creating work for young audiences.

We pride ourselves on the relationships that we have built with schools in the county and neighbouring counties and we look forward to that relationship continuing to flourish in the years to come.

The Glucksman is a contemporary art museum in the historic lower grounds of University College Cork. Designed by O’Donnell + Tuomey architects, the gallery has won numerous awards for its architecture and creative programmes. The Glucksman presents ambitious exhibitions of Irish and international art alongside a range of events and activities designed to encourage participation from all visitors, whether an art professional or first time gallery-goer.

As a place of creative connections between people and disciplines, the Glucksman provides an essential link for the University with the wider world, enabling public understanding of the visionary research undertaken in all four colleges, and welcoming students, staff and visitors to explore, enjoy and learn about art right in the heart of the UCC campus. In 2017, the Glucksman received 91,207 visits to the museum with over 10,000 active participants in its education and events programme.

The Glucksman was the first museum in Munster to receive full accreditation on the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland and on 11 July 2017, the curatorial team received an award from Minister for the Arts in Dublin Castle for maintaining these standards across all areas of the museum’s operations  including Governance, Management, Collections, Documentation, Exhibitions,  Education and Visitor Services.

Kilkenny Education Centre is an open and innovative Centre which inspires and supports teaching and learning in the educational community. The Arts are an integral part of the cultural, tourism and economic development of our catchment area. Therefore, our programme of local courses and projects are offered in collaboration with the arts and heritage offices of Kilkenny County Council and the many local arts organisations who support us to deliver high quality opportunities to local schools and teachers.

The Design and Craft Council of Ireland (DCCOI) are based in Kilkenny and collaboratively we work to manage and support the rollout of the CRAFTed Programme to schools nationally, through the ESCI network. The CRAFTed Programme gives primary school children and teachers an exciting opportunity to explore their creativity and learn new skills by working with local professional craftspeople in the classroom.

A recent collaborative project with Poetry Ireland, Irish Aid and the Kilkenny based Cartoon Saloon is another good example of how we link with others to provide innovative project opportunities for schools. Seven primary schools and three post primary schools creatively explored themes in the book and the Oscar nominated animated film, The Breadwinner. The resulting showcase of work highlighted pupil engagement in themes such as courage, self-empowerment and facing fear using many forms of creative expression and art mediums.

Kilkenny Education Centre are also part of the Teacher – Artist Partnership (TAP) arts in education initiative that trains teachers and artists to work collaboratively together to provide a 20 hour residency in primary schools.
We also support clusters of schools, through the Creative Cluster scheme, to work together to progress creative projects and to experiment, innovate and collaborate on the design, implementation and evaluation of a collaborative creative learning project. Schools have access to creative people, skills and resources from their local communities.

For our 20th anniversary, we commissioned a legacy piece of art in the lobby of our Centre, to reflect our vision and mission but also connect with and relate to education, to teachers and to children. The beautiful piece, created by local artist, Lucy McKenna, has huge potential to inspire art projects in schools, integrating maths, science and art.

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board established one of three, national Local Creative Youth Partnerships (LCYPs) in 2019, under the auspices of Creative Ireland’s Creative Youth initiative. Guided by the voice of the child and young person, the LCYP works in partnership with state and voluntary agencies to deliver creative programmes for young people, in communities across Limerick and Clare, over the life of the Creative Ireland plan up to 2022. Limerick and Clare LCYP identifies ‘the meeting point between formal and informal education’ as the site for nurturing its work and in this context works mainly in youth and community settings.

The partnership includes representatives from local authorities, youth work, early years, arts and education as well as from several areas within Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. Key partners include Limerick Youth Service, Clare Youth Service and Foróige; with whom the LCYP has already delivered creative programmes in dance, photography, drama, craft, makeup, film and in a range of visual art genres. The choice of activity is based on data collected through consultation with over 300 young people across 26 youth work settings in both counties.

Future Film Makers, a training programme run in collaboration with the commercial film sector in Limerick, provides opportunities for young people, aged between 18 and 25, seeking to get a foothold at entry level in the film industry and was launched in October 2019.

In tandem with its focus on the youth sector, the LCYP is developing creative programmes for Early Learning and Care (ELC) settings and works closely with Clare and Limerick County Childcare Committees in this regard. Dance and movement for babies and toddlers and oral storytelling for young children have been explored through two conferences for ELC practitioners in 2019. These areas of interest are central to the LCYP programme going forward.

Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership (Kerry LCYP) whose lead partner is Kerry ETB, is building a network in Kerry of collaborators, organisations and creatives who engage with young people creatively through programmes, events and activities that are guided by young people and which link formal education and out of school settings.

Kerry LCYP is part of Creative Youth, an initiative of the all-of-government Creative Ireland programme to enable the creative potential of every child and young person. A key principal of Kerry LCYP is collaboration that enables young people to be heard. At its core, it is a partnership network which enables information sharing and collaboration between local creative youth service providers to bring about a better use of existing resources and initiatives in Kerry.

Kerry LCYP forges new partnerships with local creatives, which complement the work of the formal school settings. The aspiration is that it will act as a change agent within local communities, unlocking new ways of working and supporting the creative and cultural education of thousands of children and young people. Importantly, the remit of the partnerships goes beyond that of the “arts” and includes cultural industry and creative arts activity across many disciplines (including areas such as heritage, STEM, entrepreneurship).

The range of creative activities is limitless – everything from traditional and visual arts to coding and tech; music and opera to circus arts, comedy, street arts & spectacle; creativity in business, architecture & design to heritage; film, drama, theatre or dance to literature and creative writing. Youth consultation informs the work of the partnership so that the annual work plan is well placed in a community setting.

Galway and Roscommon ETB is the second largest ETB in the country and includes three islands. Our region is renowned as a place where arts and culture are celebrated. Galway has been designated as the European Capital of Culture 2020, and GRETB, under Music Generation Galway is leading a new and exciting orchestral project for young people called “Symphonic Waves”, which was conceived under the Galway 2020 bid. County Galway has the single largest and most populous Gaeltacht area in the country. Promoting Gaeilge is an essential element of GRETB’s core service. We have eight Coláistί LánGhaeilge and a number of our Further Education and Training centres in Connemara, operate through Irish.

Galway and Roscommon ETB’s Strategy Statement 2017-2021 Empowering People for Life was published in early 2017.  GRETB’s mission is: To support individuals through learning, to achieve their full potential and contribute to social, cultural and economic development and its five core values are: Leadership, inclusivity, collaboration, innovation and inclusivity and accountability.

GRETB runs twenty second level colleges, an extensive adult education service and a range of post-leaving certificate courses. It is involved in many partnership activities at local level and provides a range of educational supports to enhance the quality of its education programmes. Galway and Roscommon ETB supports young people and adult learners through its schools, youth services and 40 further education and training centres.

GRETB is committed to promoting and supporting creative and cultural opportunities through arts in education programmes in second level colleges and in the school of music located in GTi in Galway city. The Further Education and Training Department in GRETB fully supports the creative arts and the potential the creative arts offer to engage learners, to assist them in their learning and also the potential of learners to produce creative arts of a very high standard and quality. GRETB supports a significant level of creative and cultural programmes for young people. PLC programmes offer opportunities for learners at QQI Level 5 and 6 in a range of programmes including, art portfolio preparation for people wishing to study art at a higher level, animation, a growth area in the Irish creative arts arena and drawing and visual inquiry. Programmes in fashion design, millinery and fashion retail and visual merchandising are also offered. The design and production of furniture is available at this level and the furniture produced is exhibited annually. There are a large range of media programmes available including film and documentary, music performance, studio and live sound production. GRETB is currently developing a Media based traineeship in partnership with Screen Training Ireland. This Media Production Assistant traineeship will offer an opportunity to learners to learn the skills of a production assistant while also completing an extensive on the job training experience.

GRETB is the lead partner in 3 neighbouring Music Education Partnership areas: Galway city, Galway County and Roscommon. In September 2017, GRETB was successful in its applications to Phase 2 of Music Generation and is now commencing the roll out of Music Generation vocal and instrumental tuition programmes with children and young people from January 2019.

Purpose of Dublin City Council Arts Office

The Arts are a unique and fundamental part of Dublin’s identity. Dublin City Arts Office ensures that the arts remain as a vital part of living, working and visiting the capital City. Leading, developing and working in partnership we support artists, arts organisations, the city communities to deliver quality arts, and experiences that contribute to Dublin’s cultural life and its reputation as a modern vibrant city, rich in art and heritage.

Arts, Education and Learning Policy

The Arts, Education and Learning Policy was passed by Council in November 2016. It is for the citizens of Dublin, acknowledging that each Dubliner has a right to practice and participate in appropriate and equal cultural and artistic activity and learning. It is a key document for scaffolding our approach to questions around where our responsibilities lie in addressing realistically, what resources we have as an Arts Office; what resources we can generate through strategic partnership; how might we be informed about barriers and needs directly by children and young people and their stakeholders.

Supports include:

The principal aim of the Cork City Council Arts Office is to act as a central platform for the cultural vitality of Cork city. We believe that the existence of a vibrant creative community, along with supporting equality of access to the arts for all Cork citizens, is exceedingly important to the wider “wellbeing” of this city. To do this we work with artists, cultural groups, art facilities and numerous other individuals to ensure access to the arts for all residents and visitors to Cork city.

Our current programmes around arts in education are:

Music Generation Cork City, an innovative and progressive community education programme, which delivers music educational experiences in a diverse range of music genres to 2000 children in their own communities throughout Cork city.

The Composers in the Classroom scheme is an initiative which brings professional composers and musicians into the classroom as part of a special curriculum devised for transition year music students and their teachers. Cork Choral Festival are the cultural partner, and the scheme runs with Cork County Council.  The scheme has been highly successful in encouraging and assisting students, many with little or no musical training, in their musical creativity and experimentation. The residency culminates in a seminar held as part of the Cork International Choral Festival, where student get the chance to perform their compositions and listen to the composition of other schools in the scheme.

The Unfinished of Poetry is a creative writing in school programme which began its life in 2005 when Cork was designated European Capital of Culture. During Cork 2005 the library staff conceived the idea to have a book by young people that continued beyond the City of Culture Year. The project became ‘The Unfinished Book’ and involves creative writing workshops  in local libraries with students of Cork schools each year working with professional writers and poets from Cork. The students work is published in a book which is then launched. These workshops foster creative, personal and educational development and support participants in gaining new insights into the creative art of poetry writing. The project is an arts office and Cork City Libraries schools programme managed by O’Bhéal.

Tools of the Trade is an art project that explores childhood creativity and interesting places of work created and delivered by artists, Leah Murphy and Susie Walsh. Each year, children taking part have the chance to see behind closed doors in three varied and interesting places of work in Cork city. Introductory workshops are given where the children are shown tools that are in everyday use in these particular workplaces as a starting point. In a series of fun, interactive and educational art workshops, the children then create artworks inspired by the specific activities encountered in each place of work. ‘Tools of the Trade’ is supported by the Creative Ireland Programme, an all of government five year initiative, from 2017 to 2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy.

The Arts in Context Award aims to provide opportunities for artists and community groups to work together to realise arts projects. This award supports projects that take place in community contexts such as; schools, hospitals, community care settings, youth clubs, prisons, community centre’s, clubs etc. Artists and the group must plan the project together.  There is an annual call that opens in September and closes mid November for projects to run in the following year.  Further information can be found at www.corkcity.ie/en/ council-services/services/ arts-culture-heritage/arts- office/funding-opportunities1. html

Overview of Arts in Education Programme

The Living Arts Project was established in 2013 as a long term visual arts educational scheme. The aim of this project is to provide children with an understanding and appreciation of contemporary visual art.

Over the course of a fifteen-week programme, each artist will bring their own unique styles, talents and disciplines to the participating schools, encouraging pupils to think beyond the classroom and respond visually to the world around them. So far 4 different artists and assistants have taken part in the programme and over 20 schools across Co. Wexford have benefited.

This year with Creative Ireland funding the following will take place:

Limerick City and County Council Culture and Arts Department

The Department is responsible for the delivery of the Limerick Cultural Strategy which includes actions on arts in education.

Our principal document is the Limerick Cultural Strategy. The Limerick Cultural Strategy is an integrated set of choices that will pave the way for effective planning to achieve change through cultural engagement.

Within that document object 6 is as follows;

To engage citizens through involvement in culture

Cultural organisations in Limerick have demonstrated a distinct expertise in their participatory approaches to creative and artistic work. Active engagement and participation in cultural activity has the potential to bring about transformative change to individuals and communities. We aim to achieve this in the following ways:

There are two other strategic documents which also deliver on Arts in Education. The first is the Framework Agreement with the Arts Council that include the following strategic objectives;

1. Supporting Artists and Key Strategic Organisations

2. Rural Arts and Excellence

3. Young People, Children and Education

4. Festivals and Events

The second is the Culture and Creativity Strategy for Limerick as part of Creative Ireland. There are five strategic actions within this document;

1. Future Creators: Children and young people

2. Creative Minds: Nurturing and supporting artists and other creators

3. Creative Springboard:  Fostering creative and cultural innovation

4. People, Places, Networks: Enhancing our local cultural and creative infrastructure

5. Creative Screens:  A focus on film and coding

6. Creative Citizens: People creating and accessing culture on their doorstep

Laois County Council Arts Service are committed to work with others, including the Department of Education and Skills, to support the provision of excellent arts experiences for children and young people.  Building on existing provision our arts programme supports opportunities and experiences for learning, creativity and developing skills in a range of art form.

Laois County Council Arts Service offers a wide range of services and opportunities to primary and secondary schools in Co Laois

Supports include:

Offaly County Council Arts Service is committed to developing and sustaining young people’s arts provision for Offaly through the Arts Office Youth Programme. The Arts Office strategic policy has been to focus specific attention on how young people participate in the arts, which allow young people to shine individually and as ensembles, and to be a source of their own ingenuity and creativity. We believe that facilitating projects in which young people can freely and safely be expressive, is investment into their capacity to be confident independent and innovative thinkers. We do this by programming both within schools and in partnership with other agencies and arts organisations to deliver programmes such as the Hullabaloo! Children’s Arts Festival, Cruinniú na nóg, the Mini Movies programme, Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath programme in schools.

Programming and partnership opportunities also arise from our Creative Ireland programme, the Percent for Art programme and the partnership between the Arts Offices of Offaly, Laois and the Laois/Offaly Education and Training Board.

The arts play an important role in society, contributing to the quality of life of communities, local economies, the expression of local identity and the vibrant cultural life of the county. The Tipperary Arts Service strives to broaden and deepen access to the arts and to develop strategies for sustainable engagement, creating an environment where the arts and creativity can thrive. A core focus of the County Arts Programme is to ensure access for children and young people to the arts and to assist young people in developing a language of creativity through engagement in arts activity and with practicing artists across a broad range of settings.

Our current programmes for children and young people include:

Tipperary Artist in Primary School Scheme – the Tipperary Artist in Primary Schools Scheme has supported 47 artist in residence projects in primary schools in Tipperary since 2015. The aim of this scheme is to give pupils in schools all over the county the opportunity to work with a professional artist on a once-off unique project to be originated and planned between the artist and the school. Artists from any artistic discipline may apply with a school. The school and the artist work together to propose a unique application under the scheme; there is a call for applications annually. Contact time is 50 hours per project. Projects across a range of artistic disciplines ranging from theatre to visual arts and music to storytelling will take place in Tipperary schools during 2019.

The Second Level Print in Schools Exhibition – Tipperary Arts Office offers secondary schools in the Tipperary administrative area the opportunity to borrow and display an exhibition of thirty two contemporary prints by Irish artists. The prints from twenty two artists include works by Cecil King, Alice Hanratty, Patrick Hickey, Gene Lambert, Suzannah O’Reilly and Des McMahon. Print mediums include monoprint, relief print, etching, silkscreen, lithograph, collograph, and dry point. An informative exhibition catalogue for educational purposes is included with the print exhibition. A one day printmaking workshop in the school/ venue is also available as part of this opportunity. The prints are specially packed for easy handling and transport. Teachers and schools, venues and organisations can arrange to borrow the exhibition by contacting the Tipperary Arts Office. This initiative offers teachers a contemporary, practical resource while also introducing artists, materials and processes to students. Schools are open to use the resource as they wish and as is practical for them, their spaces and resources.

Music Generation Tipperary: Tipperary is among five new counties in Ireland to participate in the most recent phase of development of Music Generation. Over the coming years, Music Generation Tipperary will offer new opportunities for hundreds of children and young people ages 0 to 18 to access high-quality, subsidised vocal and instrumental tuition in their local communities. Initiated by Music Network in 2010, Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme, co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and Local Music Education Partnerships (LMEPs). Locally, Music Generation Tipperary will be led by Tipperary Education and Training Board (ETB) in partnership with Tipperary County Council. Planning for the roll-out of Music Generation Tipperary is currently underway, which involves recruitment of a Music Generation Development Officer to oversee programme development.
Music Generation Tipperary’s goal will be to develop a range of affordable and accessible ways for children and young people to engage in performance music education. This will include the coordination of music tuition services within the county, working in partnership with schools, community music groups and tuition centres in the formation of choirs, ensembles, access programmes, composition projects, songwriting initiatives and more, across a broad range of musical genres and styles.

The individual is at the heart of any programme delivered by Roscommon County Council and the arts programme is no different.

One of the four priorities of the Roscommon County Council Arts Plan is ‘Children and Young People’. Through art, children and young people can create something that, until that point, was only imagined, creating visual manifestations of abstract ideas. Exposure to the arts through drawing, painting, music, song, theatre and dance can help in the development of multiple skills and capacities such as persistence, collaboration, creative thinking, motivation and problem solving.

Roscommon County Council will continue to promote access to the arts for children and young people so that they have the opportunity to experience high quality arts in a non-formal setting as creators, participants, spectators and critics. Successful programmes such as the Roscommon County Youth Theatre and the Roscommon County Youth Orchestra will be strengthened and developed as will the children’s literary programmes and the artists in schools programmes.  New programmes, projects and arts-related activities in pre, primary and post primary schools will be introduced to ensure that programmes are current, innovative and contemporary.

Our current programmes include Artist in Schools Programme, Artists in Pre/Play/After Schools, Arts School Takeover, ‘Pop Up Poetry for Lil’ Peeps’, Writers in Post Primary Schools Programme, Bookworms Children’s Festival, Music Generation, Roscommon County Youth Orchestra, Roscommon County Youth Theatre, Cruinniu na nOg, Children’s Art in Libraries Programme and Teacher Artist Partnership Programme with Carrick on Shannon and Athlone Education Centres.

Music Generation Mayo, of which Mayo Arts Service is a founding partner, provides performance music education opportunities for children and young people in Mayo. The establishment of a Music Instrument Bank was one of the core strategic aims of the partnership in its original music development plan for Mayo. The inclusion of this resource was directly influenced by a consultation with young people who specifically cited lack of access to instruments as being a key challenge in furthering their musical development. Music Generation Mayo provides wide-ranging opportunities for children and young people to develop as music performers through increased access to subsidised general and specialist tuition. The programme also supports the development of music related activities e.g. sound recording, stage management, documentation and promotion of events.

We also offer local courses such as film, music, and art courses covering all strands of the Primary Curriculum.

We invested heavily as part of the Laois Commemoration of the Centenary of the 1916 Rising in a collaborative Laois Post-Primary schools project. This was unique as all Post-Primary schools in the county participated in this project. As a result, on entering Laois Education Centre you cannot but be impressed by the large ceramic wall sculpture “looking Back – Looking Forward”.  By means of visual imagery, it tells the complex story, in its own unique way, of 1916 and beyond, of the heroes and the ordinary man, of the everyday artefacts and of the symbols of past and future all of which have made our Nation what it is.  It was a mammoth ask of all involved, starting with a blank canvas, teasing our possible ideas, problem, solutions and outcomes for the group of 12 teachers and thirty one student ambassadors from their respective schools.

The Centre provides services for schools, teachers, parents, boards and other relevant persons which support them in carrying out their functions in respect of the provision of education which is recognised for that purpose by the Minister.  The Centre provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD)  for teachers and school communities.  It promotes the Arts at both Primary and Post-Primary level and engages the Arts Council, South Dublin County Council Arts Officer, etc.

We offer schools the opportunity to participate in various national initiatives such as:

and provide local courses covering all strands of the Primary Curriculum.

Drumcondra Education Centre supports the Arts at both Primary and Post-Primary level.  Our aim is to ensure that teachers and schools receive supports in various strands of The Arts that will further their capacity to teach these strands at Primary and Post-Primary level.

We offer schools the opportunity to participate in various national initiatives such as:

Donegal Education Support Centre is an open and innovative Centre which inspires and supports teaching and learning in the educational community. The Arts are an integral part of the cultural, tourism and economic development of our catchment area of Co. Donegal. Therefore, our programme of local courses, initiatives and projects are offered in collaboration with the Arts and Heritage Officers and the many local arts organisations who support us to deliver high quality opportunities to local schools and teachers. The Centre is heavily involved in the CRAFTed Programme.

The CRAFTed Programme gives primary school children and teachers an exciting opportunity to explore their creativity and learn new skills by working with local professional craftspeople in the classroom. Participating schools work closely with a local artist in a very hands on initiative with children’s work being showcased an annual event in the Cultural Centre each May. Donegal Education Support Centre are also part of the Teacher-Artist Partnership (TAP) arts in education initiative that trains teachers and artists to work collaboratively together to provide a 20 hour residency in primary schools.

We also support clusters of schools, through the Creative Cluster scheme, to work together to progress creative projects and to experiment, innovate and collaborate on the design, implementation and evaluation of a collaborative creative learning project. Schools have access to creative people, skills and resources from their local communities.

Here in Donegal, we are fortunate to have fabulously talented crafts and art people who share their expertise in local classrooms and work closely with our teachers throughout the county, providing local supports to teachers and schools in the catchment area.

Cork Education Support Centre supports the Arts in Education through the provision of opportunities for professional development for teachers, engagement in projects such as Teacher/Artist Partnership (TAP), Creative Clusters and Summer courses. Our TAP courses and Creative Clusters are very well attended and supported by Cork City Council Art Department. We have a very proactive artist base in Cork that cover a wide variety of mediums such as Drama, Poetry, Visual, Puppetry and Music.

Teacher Artist Partnership summer courses offer an opportunity to explore an arts-in-education initiative where artists and teachers train to work in partnership in a primary school setting. The TAP Residency programme is a fully funded in-school opportunity to work collaboratively in the classroom for the following academic year. The programme aims to improve literacy, numeracy and wellbeing in the classroom environment whilst also allowing students and pupils alike to explore their artistic talents.

The Creative Clusters Scheme forms part of the Creative Youth plan to enable the creativity of our children and young people. There is a grant available to participating schools and Clusters can consist of primary schools only, post-primary schools only or a combination of primary and post primary schools, with a minimum of three schools participating and a maximum of five. This programme provides an opportunity for clusters of schools to experiment, innovate and collaborate on the design, implementation and evaluation of a bespoke creative learning project, with access to a specialist facilitator, artist or creative expertise in whatever their own chosen area of interest or theme might be. These resources help the schools build a programme of learning and activities tailor-made for their students.

Clare Education Centre supports the arts in education through the provision of opportunities for professional development for teachers, engagement in projects, promotion of STEAM activities and hosting classes for enjoyment in art, painting, music and drama.

Clare Education Centre actively promotes the CRAFTed initiative where a local craftsperson provides a craft and design programme in primary schools where pupils can engage in a hands-on ‘in classroom’ collaborative process and experience the learning and engagement in the learning process.

Clare Education Centre coordinates locally the Teacher – Artist Partnership (TAP) arts in education initiative that trains teachers and artists to work collaboratively together to provide a 20 hour residency in an area of the Arts in the teachers class.

Under the auspices of Clare Education Centre, schools are encouraged and facilitated to participate in the Creative Clusters initiative, which allows clusters of schools to identify an area of the Arts that they wish to develop in their schools and to carry out this project as a group with the support of an experienced Arts facilitator.

The STEAM project at Clare Education Centre, encourages and supports schools in active engagement with STEAM initiatives through modelling, peer teaching, demonstrations and active discovery.

In addition to the provision of continued professional development courses for teachers in areas of the arts, Clare Education Centre also provides art classes for pleasure.

Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centre supports the Arts in Education through the provision of opportunities for professional development for teachers, engagement in projects such as CRAFTed, Teacher Artist Partnership (TAP), Creative Cluster and various Summer and local courses.

CRAFTed is the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s Primary School Visual Arts based educational programme. It promotes learning through creativity and innovation, placing professional craftspeople to work alongside teachers in primary schools. It focuses on integrated learning methodologies through the Visual Arts Curriculum, using a process-led methodology that focuses on the child’s own creativity.

Teacher Artist Partnership offers teachers the opportunity to explore the nature and educational value of partnerships between teachers and artists in supporting arts education in schools. This course potentially improves literacy, numeracy & well-being in all schools including DEIS. Many schools across the country are engaged in projects with artists, ranging from one-off artist visits to longer term projects, and in a variety of art forms. Teacher/Artist Partnership looks at the ways in which working with an artist in school can be enhanced in order to provide meaningful experiences for children and a lasting impact on school practice. Particular emphasis is on the role of the teacher and artist, their unique contributions to projects and the significant benefits that can accrue from a dynamic teacher/artist relationship in the planning and implementation of projects. Placing the teacher/artist project within the overall arts curriculum in schools and exploration of practical issues are central.

We also support clusters of schools, through the Creative Cluster scheme, to work together to progress creative projects and to experiment, innovate and collaborate on the design, implementation and evaluation of a collaborative creative learning project. Schools have access to creative people, skills and resources from their local communities.

Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centre offers a variety of artistic workshops in the Summer and various local workshops are run throughout the year.

Co-founded by The Arts Council and Trinity College Dublin in 1978, The Douglas Hyde Gallery is a contemporary art gallery within the grounds of Trinity campus. Alongside a diverse programme of developing, producing and presenting innovative Irish and international exhibitions, the Gallery runs a Learning and Engagement programme that seeks to open out discussion around the exhibitions.

This programme includes free screenings, talks, tours and other events by artists, curators, academics and others. The programme makes connections across disciplines and forms, bringing different creative languages into a broader conversation around the function of art and the role of the gallery.

The knowledgeable and friendly Gallery team regularly offer free tours of our exhibitions to second and third level students, particularly sixth year art students preparing for the gallery question in the Leaving Certificate.

Through the learning and engagement programme, The Douglas Hyde Gallery actively engages with a diversity of communities, from the student and academic community in Trinity, to communities in the wider city, nationally and internationally.

The RHA supports children and young people to engage in our exhibitions, studio and wider programmes through a variety of channels. A current strategic focus for the organisation is to develop our younger audiences, in particular those in second level education and youth projects. We are currently building a number of strands of programming that will support this aim, which includes the development of a secondary school arts in education programme. Over an extended period we aim to develop long term relationships with the students and art teachers in three inner city schools, this will include annual artist residency projects, one-off exhibition and studio visits at the RHA, professional development days, where students will meet with staff from the RHA to learn about their career paths and daily work, and work experience placements. This new strand builds on previous projects with Ringsend College funded by Mayson Hayes & Curran and Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green.

We also support primary school children to engage with art practice through one-off exhibition tours and studio visits. With additional resources, we would seek to expand our primary school programme to include longer term projects.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios has been developing close connections with inner city schools since 2013, at both primary and secondary level, through our Creative Generations programme and more recently through collaborations with Education Curator Katy Fitzpatrick and Philosopher Prof. Aislinn O’Donnell and their Art and Philosophy in the Classroom project. We aim to support children and young people to directly encounter high quality art and to develop their skills working with professional artists and art practitioners.

We work with schools through one-off exhibition and studio visits, and longer-term outreach projects (both on and off-site) taking place over 4 – 8 weeks. Visiting the gallery and the artist’s studio gives an insight into the ways that artists work and how artwork is presented in a gallery space.

Our Creative Generations programme of artist residencies involves TBG+S studio artists working collaboratively with children over 8-weeks to create an ambitious new artwork for their school.

The Art and Philosophy strand of programming engages students with a gallery based exhibition, through discussion, art and performance activities, philosophical inquiry, and art making.

Limerick City Gallery of Art places education and learning at the heart of its programming agenda with an Access Programme running in conjunction with its exhibitions.

The Shakespeare Review

The Theatre Royal’s Shakespeare Review programme works with teachers, Shakespearean actors and experienced young adult theatre facilitators to review the current Leaving Certificate text. The bold and exciting ninety-minute performance of Hamlet helps students gain a deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s iconic masterpiece by lifting the play off the page and onto the stage, making it accessible for students as they start their exam revision. The actors vividly present key scenes on stage which are then explored in detail by the facilitator between scenes, bringing to life Shakespeare’s vibrant characters.

“Discussing the scenes in a modern way made it very easy for the students to relate to.” – Tipperary Teacher

“Excellent ideas for classroom approach.” – East Cork Teacher

“Enjoyable and worthwhile, gave students a focus for study and revision” – Waterford City teacher

Draiocht – Space for Vision

OUR VISION

Our vision is of an Ireland where everyone has the opportunity to enjoy and be enriched by the arts.

OUR MISSION

Draíocht means magic.
Our name gives us a clear mission: to share the magic of the arts.

We do so in three ways:

One of our 5 Strategic Priorities is CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE and specifically Giving children and young people a voice. Draiocht’s Goal is to enable art for, by and with children and young people.
Our belief in the value of the arts for children and young people as well as the demographics of the area drives this priority for us. We want to offer every child and young person ongoing access to the arts in a safe and stimulating environment where they feel free to be their creative selves. Our work will be informed by what we know but, more importantly, will respond to what the younger members of our community tell us is relevant and of interest to them. In doing so, we will uphold our position as a model of best practice in arts provision for children and young people.

What we are setting out to do to achieve this goal:

How we will know we have achieved this goal?

Project is Ireland’s first arts centre: an independent and ambitious multidisciplinary organisation in the heart of Dublin that houses a year-round programme of exhibitions, dance, theatre, opera and other performance events. Project is a home for contemporary arts, a producing house, a resource for artists and a critical hub, working with artists across all art forms to make and present extraordinary work that inspires and provokes.

We believe fundamentally in the transformative power of art, and that the artistic community can be a powerful and profound force for change. Influenced, inspired and shaped by our location in the heart of Dublin city and the diversity of people who live here, our reputation and influence reaches nationally and internationally.

Audience engagement is at the heart of what we do. We want to find out more about what our audiences think about the work that we are creating and to make meaningful connections between them, us and the artists we champion. Through our Project Artists initiative, access programmes, partnerships with secondary schools and community outreach schemes we encourage, nurture and advocate for all forms of artistic development across all ages and audiences.

We believe in the potential of every individual. Our access programmes creates opportunities for secondary school students to see professional work, to participate in workshops with presenting artists, and to partner with artists on creative projects. Many of the artists we work with have extraordinary track records working with community and youth groups and we are keen to bring this experience and commitment to young adults. Our aim is to provide the next generation of Irish audiences and artists with the opportunity to make work that is relevant to their lives and for which they have a sense of authorship. We are motivated by the importance of arts and creativity in secondary education, and invested in creating opportunities for young people to explore their creative potential, bringing them to the heart of Project.

Axis as a learning organisation provides opportunity across age contexts for people to explore their creativity, leading onto the development of skills and experience in a chosen artform or project. Axis has a huge focus on work with and for children and young people both within and without education settings:

Galway Youth Theatre

Galway Youth Theatre is a vibrant arts resource for young people in Galway. The Theatre was set up in 1991 with the aim of providing a safe environment where young people could gain access to the arts through a theatre training programme. The training allows the participants to acquire new skills in performance and to develop their confidence and self-esteem. GYT offers its main service provision to young people in Galway city but also facilitates programmes throughout Galway County.
GYT provides a two year performance programme that aims to give participants training in various performance disciplines, from characterisation and voice work to physical movement, stage combat and improvisation. Past participants include Tommy Tiernan and Paul McClusky.
GYT actors have gone on to work in theatre, advertisements and TV programmes such as Game of Thrones and Ros na Rún. GYT also runs an outreach programme in County Galway, where professional directors and actors travel to schools and work on tailor made programmes for post-primary students.

Cúirt Labs

Taking place every April during the Cúirt International Festival of Literature, Cúirt Labs is an innovative programme for primary and post-primary students. Students attend talks, workshops and readings designed specifically for the Labs, in English and Irish, with writers, illustrators, musicians, video game designers, clowns, architects and artists.
The Labs take place in the Galway Arts Centre where three floors of gallery space become custom made spaces for inventiveness and imagination. The first two days of the Labs cater for primary school level and the third day is dedicated to post-primary pupils. Cúirt Labs also run in-school events in County Galway for primary and post-primary schools.

Leaving Cert Art History Study Day

Every year Galway Arts Centre hosts a study day refresher course for Leaving Cert Art History & Appreciation students. The course takes the form of two lectures which cover Art in Ireland and European Art (1000AD – present). These lectures function as intensive revision sessions focusing on key points – they are not intended as introductions to the topics. Hand-outs for each theme, designed in conjunction with the National Gallery of Ireland, are provided. This is followed by a visit to the Galway Arts Centre where students cover question three the ‘Visit to an Art Gallery’ question in Section III.

Post-Primary Schools

Galway Arts Centre runs gallery visits for secondary school groups. These visits are designed around each individual group, taking into account what stage of the curriculum the students are at and what they are interested in learning more about. The visits can be specifically geared towards specific learning objectives prioritised by the teacher or can simply be a way to encourage students to engage with, discuss and appreciate art.

Primary Schools

Galway Arts Centre welcomes primary school groups to visit the gallery, particularly if an exhibition is especially suited to children. Exhibition visits generally incorporate a guided interactive tour followed by a workshop designed specifically for the group. The visits are planned prior to the event in conjunction with the teacher, in order to give a high quality, tailor-made experience to the group. Specific once-off projects with primary schools, involving all pupils, have also been designed with teachers.

Galway Arts Centre also works in collaboration with Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, Tulca Festival of Visual Art & Galway City & County Libraries on gallery visits and workshops.

Solstice is committed to developing arts in education opportunities for schools and teachers. We focus on creating connections for schools and teachers to practicing artists, facilitating understanding and enjoyment of our exhibitions and events and also engaging students practically with art making in the centre. We are currently developing our Schools programme to include educational resources for teachers in Meath. This will allow us to further interpret our exhibitions for schools and to engage relevant elements of the Primary and Secondary School Curriculums in more detail, a specific focus of this is Leaving Certificate, Art Appreciation. We hope to also develop creative CPD opportunities for Primary & Secondary teachers within Solstice to encourage and support engagement with the arts in the classroom. We welcome any feedback or engagement from teachers, schools and other cultural organisations to assist us in developing our programme to meet their needs.

Our programme for schools includes:

The Dock is part of the fabric of the wider arts and enterprise community of Carrick on Shannon and the North West region supporting local arts initiatives and local enterprise including the many superb festival events taking place in the area.

A key element of The Dock’s overall artistic programming policy is to ensure that we provide opportunities for people of all ages and in particular, young people, to engage meaningfully with the artistic programme we provide.

The Dock offers a broad, year round programme of high quality visual arts, theatre, literature, performances, music and dance, talks, classes, youth arts, family and child-orientated days and arts leisure/learning activities from the very best of local and visiting artists and we endeavour to ensure that an educational strand is woven into the overall fabric of what we offer. To this end the centre develops classes, masterclasses, workshops and courses many of which are designed specifically with younger audiences in mind. To deliver these programmes we employ professional artists and practitioners who bring knowledge, expertise and a genuine aspiration to make the arts accessible to all through their work. In addition to bespoke educational projects The Dock hosts senior, intermediate and junior youth theatre.

The Dock works both as a receiving and development venue, offering audiences diversity and quality of arts experiences.

Mullingar Arts Centre’s principle mission is to promote the performing arts through participation, education, engagement and experience of professional performances. In particular to foster an awareness of the arts in young people as participants, students and audience members. There are several different programmes which enable young people engage with the performing arts.

Our regular annual programme for young people includes the following;

Tuition in music, drama and dance to schools via an Education Outreach Programme to primary schools.

The School Show project allows all primary schools stage a large scale production of a popular musical at the centre. All costumes, props, sets, lighting, choreography, music and direction are provided by the centre.

The centre works in collaboration with secondary schools to stage drama and musical productions.

Music in the Classroom gives schoolchildren knowledge of the mechanics of a concert band, and in association with the army band an experience of a concert band performance.

In addition to Stage Schools in Mullingar, the centre operates Stage Schools throughout the Midlands thus allowing equal access to the arts for children in rural villages. All participants take part in stage productions annually.

Access to all dance forms through the three Dance schools are within the centre.

The Youth Group and Mullingar Student Players stage a drama and a large scale musical every year.

Ballina Arts Centre is access-driven and participatory in ethos. Since its inception, it has developed and maintained strong links with a number of local community groups, schools and educational organisations.

The centre also plays host to a number of local dance, drama and music schools and organisations. These groups use the building regularly and feel very much ‘at home’ at the centre.

Ballina Arts Centre is a partner in two highly successful youth arts projects – The Core Youth Music Hub (in partnership with Music Generation Mayo) and Mayo Youth Theatre (in partnership with Mayo County Council).

The Core is a creative space for young musicians, under the auspices of Music Generation Mayo and housed within the centre. At The Core, young musicians can express themselves and work on their music. The building has a dedicated rehearsal space with lots of instruments (including electric guitars, drums, piano and synths, as well as a range of amplification, PA, and studio recording equipment). Members of The Core have access to a range of performance opportunities and industry workshops.

Opportunities for learning are maximised by linking with other youth theatres, through travel and annual productions. These productions are developed and presented at the centre.

As part of the centre’s education programme, the venue presents workshops, talks, and seminars around the visual art exhibition programme.

With support from Access Cinema, Ballina Arts Centre also presents an annual children’s film festival, Embers, which incorporates educational schools screening.

The Glens Centre works very closely with local primary and secondary schools. It provides space for weekly theatre workshops for transition year students and also free masterclasses with professional theatre practitioners. We operate two youth theatres, one senior and one junior, from September to April.
Annually, we programme two on-site residencies for primary schools in literature & music. Schools are facilitated with a number of shows in-house whereby they can avail of our auditorium with full technical back-up.

Based at Balor Arts Centre, Balor Developmental Community Arts Group (DCA) runs a number of arts in education projects. With the kind support of local, national and international funding bodies, the Balor DCA has a celebrated history in running educational projects across the North West of Ireland.

Music in Action

The Balor DCA provides expert educational music schemes. All of these lesson plans are based on the ‘Primary Schools Curriculum’ arts education text. We believe that learning through the arts enlivens instruction, increases student involvement, and deepens both the meaning and memory of the learning at hand. Our educational music worker is Seamus Curran, who has been involved with Balor in a number of different guises, from musical director to actor. He has worked in primary schools for the last three years on various musical projects. The Balor DCA is delighted to have the opportunity to expand its arts-in-schools programme with Music in Action schemes of work. The Music in Action programme is a blend of music and education that is child-centered and suitable for all ages. The programme takes place over eight weeks with classes of one hour in duration per week. Areas covered include the introduction to musical instruments, song-writing, practice and performance as well as a focus on life skills such as concentration, observation, speaking and listening, co-operation, team building and – most importantly – creative thinking.

Drama in Action

The Drama in Action programme is a blend of drama and education that is child-centered and suitable for all age groups. This programme takes place over eight weeks with classes of one hour in duration each week. Like Music in Action, there is also a focus on life skills, including co-operation and team building and sequencing of ideas. Educational drama can also be used as an effective educational tool to explore issue-based themes, linking with other curriculum subjects such as those covered in the Social, Personal & Heath Education curriculum.
The students who have participated on this programme have shown definite improvements in concentration skills, creative thinking, listening skills, class participation, problem solving and teamwork. The programme allows teachers to experience first-hand the implementation of drama methodologies in their own classrooms.

The Ark is a dedicated cultural centre for children that creates opportunities for children, along with their families and friends or with their school, to discover and love art. Through their work with leading Irish and international artists, children can enjoy performances in their unique child-sized theatre, view engaging exhibitions or participate in creative workshops.

Welcoming audiences from the ages of 2-12, The Ark runs on a programme to programme basis so every visit is different. Activities span across all areas of The Arts including but not limited to, Theatre, Music, Visual Art and Film. While the majority of programming comes directly from The Ark, partnerships with many of the major cultural festivals contributes to the diversity of events offered. Throughout the year you are bound to find a programme to match the tastes and interests of the young people in your lives. For the very young, The Ark offers monthly Seedlings workshops for children from ages 2-4. These are led by an Artist in Residence whose expertise lies in arts and culture for early year’s audience. The art form explored changes with each Artist in Residence.

With dedicated schools events incorporated into much of the main programme, The Ark aims to provide access to the arts to as many children as possible. They aim to facilitate in-the-classroom learning through the provision of resource packs for as many of The Ark’s events as possible and support teachers in their delivery of the curriculum through arts experiences and activities with their class.

The Ark is also dedicated to Continuing Professional Development for both teachers and arts practitioners. They host a wide range and of one day and week long CPD courses throughout the year as well continuing to create new opportunities for artist development.

For up to date information on the current Ark programme, visit their website or give their lovely Visitor Services Team a call on the number below.

We at The Civic accept our responsibility as a nationally funded and locally placed arts facility to provide for the citizens in our community. In so doing, we fulfill stated objectives in The Arts Council’s Making Great Art Work, The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht’s Culture 2025 and the government’s legacy programme for 2016, Creative Ireland.

The arts in education charter identifies two strands to arts in education practice:  one involving interventions by the arts world into the domain of formal education, and the other involving students engaging with the arts in the public domain, usually in publicly- funded arts venues, both local or national.

The Civic Theatre’s arts in education programme, Tenderfoot is an example of the latter. Tenderfoot is unique in providing a space where young people can make art without restriction.  This sacred space is made possible by the collaboration between the arts and education sectors. Tenderfoot, utilising a model of apprenticeship, provides a rare space where the professional artist engages meaningfully with members of the public, in this case young people, resulting in the development of new artistic voices.

Unique in its scale, Tenderfoot works on the model of work experience that underpins most transition year programmes. We provide a three week, full time work experience module for our students in January each year. During that time our young people behave as a youth theatre ensemble, rehearsing, designing and performing a number of the plays that they have written. Plays that reflect their experiences, their lives and how they see the world. These plays perform to two distinct audiences; an audience made up of the young people’s peers and a general theatre audience.

It is estimated that, to date, Tenderfoot has directly and indirectly impacted in excess of 11,000 young people in the South Dublin County Council region.

The vision at the Sligo Academy of Music is to foster a lifelong love and appreciation for music, by providing quality music tuition and performance opportunities for all, in an environment that nurtures creativity and excellence and encourages students of all ages to achieve their musical goals.

!!!! The Hunt Museum

!!!! Roscommon Arts Centre

!!!! Kilkenny Education Centre

!!!! Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board

!!!! Kerry Education & Training Board

!!!! Cork City Council Arts Service

Our principal document is the Limerick Cultural Strategy. The Limerick Cultural Strategy is an integrated set of choices that will pave the way for effective planning to achieve change through cultural engagement.

Within that document object 6 is as follows;

!!!! Tipperary County Council Arts Service

The arts venues in Tipperary are key providers of programming for children and young people in the county. The Source Arts Centre, Thurles; Nenagh Arts Centre, The Tipperary Excel Arts Centre in Tipperary Town and the South Tipperary Arts Centre and Tipperary County Museum in Clonmel all run a range of engagement programmes and provide opportunites for young people, children and their families to engage with the arts.

Tipperary County Council also provides support to a range of festivals and events which deliver strong programme strands for children and young people in Tipperary. www.whatsonintipp.ie lists festivals taking place in Tipperary. Spleodar, Nenagh’s Haloween Arts Festival is a children’s arts festival which delivers high quality arts experiences that are curated specifically for children and young people during the Halloween mid-term break annually. Full programme http://spleodar.ie

The Tipperary Youth Theatre provides opportunities for non-formal youth engagement. Established by the Tipperary Arts Office, Tipperary Youth Theatre was developed in Thurles in 1999 and in Nenagh in 2007 to provide a platform for engagement with theatre for young people in the 13-17 age group. Both Youth Theatres now have a long history of presenting an annual production and training programme which is youth led and youth centred and are managed by The Source Arts Centre in Thurles and Nenagh Arts Centre.

Tipperary Dance Platform (TDP) is a platform for dance, dedicated to the enrichment and stimulation of dance in Tipperary. The activities of Tipperary Dance Platform are co-ordinated around three main strands: The TDP International Dance Festival, engagement with the community and the provision of resources for dance artists and the professional dance sector. Based from the Tipperary Excel Arts Centre in Tipperary Town, the Tipperary Dance Platform works with local schools through dance residency programmes and invitations to attend performances during the TDP International Dance Festival.

The Tipperary Arts Office also has a Percussion Instrument Collection which is available on loan to schools and community groups. Please contact the arts office for further information.

We also encourage projects that introduce children to experience the cross disciplinary nature of the arts, projects which connect ideas and art making to other subjects e.g. history, science, the environment, local, national and global cultures and traditions.

The Artists Residency programme currently has two strands: Arts Space and Arts Days. The scheme is open to artists from any artistic discipline including visual arts and crafts, music, dance, drama, literature, film, architecture, photography, and new media.

2018/19 flagship projects include a year-long artist residency with artist, Shona MacGillivray and St. Anne’s Special School and a Spoken Word Poetry Project with transition year students.

!!!! Donegal Education Centre

!!!! Cork Education Support Centre

!!!! Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin

!!!! Temple Bar Gallery & Studios

This is followed by a visit to the Galway Arts Centre where students cover question three the ‘Visit to an Art Gallery’ question in Section III.

Post-Primary Schools

!!!! Civic Theatre Tallaght

!!!! Sligo Academy of Music
